Chamrousse 1750: the story of a mountain enthusiast

The very first inn was built in Chamrousse in 1863 by Father Tasse. This hermit of Roche Béranger welcomes hiking enthusiasts and lovers of the great outdoors. As early as 1878, Henry Duhamel, a mountaineer from Grenoble, went down the slopes for the first time with a pair of skis he discovered at the Universal Exhibition in Paris. This new means of locomotion is a real discovery for this mountain lover. It was on the slopes of Chamrousse that the mountaineer tested his discovery and in 1891, he made his first ascent to the Croix de Chamrousse. The foundation of the Ski Club goes back to 1929 thanks to the creation of a road to the village. It is officially in 1950 that the ski resort of Chamrousse was born. Then follows the creation of the first cable car and various poles of activities. It is a subsidiary of the Rotschild group that participates in the development of the ski area.

During the Olympic Games in Grenoble in 1968, many French skiers distinguished themselves, such as Jean-Claude Killy and Marielle Goitschel, and the resort of Chamrousse became more and more famous. Jean-Claude Killy gave his name to the Espace Killy in the resort of Tignes and Val d'Isère.

Chamrousse: the smart ski resort

By 2030, the resort of Chamrousse wants to combine sustainable development, new technologies and architecture with the implementation of a project: Chamrousse Mountain Park 2030. This new turn would make the destination the very first connected resort in the Alps. This future "Smart Station" wishes to maintain its dynamism and attractiveness by developing a Business Tourism destination and by being the mirror of the Research and Innovation cluster of the Grenoble basin. This 4 Seasons resort would combine objects connected to sustainable development by optimising renewable energies for infrastructures but also create outdoor applications around a real sustainable impetus. Combining technology and respect for the environment, such is the station's objective.

Highly committed to sustainable development, the resort of Chamrousse received the Flocon Vert label in 2017 created by the Mountain Riders association. It was rewarded for its actions implemented to respect the environment, such as the waste collection day. In addition, throughout the year, Chamrousse is committed, for example, to fighting food waste and raising awareness among visitors to respect the hiking areas. The resort trains its employees for the preservation of natural resources and the reduction of the ecological footprint.
